Bakersfield Orthodontist Offers Free Mouthguards to Athletes

June 14th, 2013

As most people know, at Thurman Orthodontics we love smiles, but what some people don’t know is that we are also big football fans.  With the youth summer football practices in session and the upcoming fall season just around the corner, we have decided to offer free mouthguards to any youth football player in an effort to help them protect their teeth while they’re on the field.

Players can come to our Bakersfield Orthodontics location to be fitted for your custom mouthguard.  Please give our office a call to schedule an appointment, 661-395-0698.

For Dr. Michael Thurman, who treats many Bakersfield youth football players orthodontic needs, a well fit mouthguard should be a standard part of any football players uniform.  “We see many sports related injuries that effect the mouth, lips, and teeth. A hit to the mouth with braces on can cause serious cuts or abrasions to the soft tissue of the lips or inside your mouth.  Even without braces, blows to the mouth can cause severe injury to the teeth.  I would like to see every youth athlete in Bakersfield be wearing a proper fitting mouthguard while playing any sport, and if we can help even one athlete prevent a tooth injury by wearing a mouth guard I will be thrilled.  That’s why we have decided to offer these free of charge.”

Any athlete going through braces, Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, or not even in orthodontic treatment at all, can give our office a call and schedule an appointment for a custom fitting mouthguard, free of charge:)  Good Luck this season!!

What do Invisalign and squeezable fruit have in common? Bakersfield Orthodontist, Dr. Thurman in the news talking about both!!

April 23rd, 2013

Dr. Thurman recently had the privilege to be an “expert dental contributor” to a news story from a very popular blog site.  See the article for more information here, http://www.allparenting.com/my-family/articles/967379/squeezable-fruit-can-cause-harm-to-kids-teeth.

“It’s great to contribute some dental knowledge and advice to parents around the country and the rest of the world.   If this article prevents even one child from developing tooth decay it was well worth the time and effort.  A keystone to the Thurman Orthodontic philosophy is to help as many people as we possibly can in any way we can, and this article hopefully helps some parents that may have been unaware of issues presented herein.”  says Dr. Thurman.

Dr. Thurman has also been spotted in the news talking about Invisalign Teen, which we offer to our Bakersfield, CA patients.  He authored an article about this emerging technology and how certain teens can get that beautiful smile and healthy bite without the need for traditional metal braces.  Check out the article below!  If you have any questions for Dr. Thurman or would like to schedule a complimentary consultation, please give our office a call: 661-395-0698.

Do Wisdom Teeth cause crowding of your front teeth?

March 27th, 2013

How many times have you heard this? Did you know this all started after a paper was written on by an orthodontist over 50 years ago?

In 1961, orthodontist Dr. Leroy Vego, published an article, “A Longitudinal Study of Mandibular Arch Perimeter” which examined the role of wisdom teeth on lower front tooth crowding. This study was run over six years with patients from ages 13 to 19. He reported that there was a significantly greater degree of crowding in patients with wisdom teeth. Dr. Vego concluded: “that the erupting lower third molar can exert a force on approximating teeth.”

From this statement, it was decided that lower wisdom teeth “push” the teeth in front of them as they come into the mouth, causing the front teeth to crowd. Consequently, general dentists, orthodontists, and oral surgeons recommended the extraction of wisdom teeth to prevent the recurrence of crowding after orthodontic treatment.

Later research disproves Dr Vego’s theory that wisdom teeth exert enough pressure to affect the movement of anterior teeth. Later studies tracking patients for 25 years determined that aging was also a major factor whether a patient went through orthodontic treatment or not and that teeth drift forward throughout life naturally, along with other factors. Tooth-size, tooth-shape, and original tooth-position also play a significant role in crowding.

Today, the premise no longer exists for the extraction of wisdom teeth simply to minimize future crowding of front teeth. However, timing of the removal of suspect wisdom teeth, especially impacted wisdom teeth that don’t have room to erupt properly, is still recommended no later than late teens through early 20’s. Wisdom teeth can easily cause future dental problems.

What problems can occur with NOT removing impacted/retained wisdom teeth?

  •  Bone and soft tissue defects behind the second molars
  • Root resorption of second molars
  • Decay due to inability to brush and floss properly
  • Crowding or shifting of posterior teeth affecting orthodontic results
  • An infection (periocornitis) that occurs around partially erupted lower third molars
  • Cysts and tumors around impacted third molars

At Thurman Orthodontics, we encourage the extraction of wisdom teeth, if indicated, prior to college. As teens complete final growth, jaw bones become increasingly more dense. This may result in higher post-operative pain following wisdom tooth removal, especially after the roots of the third molars are fully developed. Typically, after the age of 25, wisdom teeth are not extracted and simply monitored by your general dentist with routine periodic x-rays to address any cause for concern.

As Dr. Thurman always says, “If you wear your retainers after braces, the teeth will not move regardless of whether wisdom teeth are there or not.”  So it’s retainers that will keep you teeth straight, not having your wisdom teeth out.

Bakersfield Orthodontist, Dr. Thurman monitors third molar development throughout treatment and will make recommendations when appropriate based on individual circumstances. Feel free to contact our office or leave a comment below regarding more information about the extraction of wisdom teeth.

Invisalign Travel Tips – Are you Prepared?

February 19th, 2013

Bakersfield Orthodontist, Dr. Michael Thurman knows that at Thurman Orthodontics some teens and adults opt for Invisalign, the “braceless” alternative to traditional braces to straighten teeth. Many patients choose Invisalign because of busy schedules with school or work and Invisalign treatment does not require really any lifestyle changes.  What would you do if something happened to your Invisalign aligners while you were out of town? What if an aligner breaks, is left behind at a restaurant while eating, or you lost your purse or luggage with your aligners inside? Here are some tips for Invisalign patients on what to do if you are out of town and something happens to your aligners!

Tips for traveling with Invisalign

  • A good rule of thumb is to always take your current set of aligners that you are wearing, but also bring you previous set, and your next set of aligners along with you on your trip.  Depending on how long you have been wearing the current set will determine whether you will go back to previous set or move forward to the next set. If Dr. Thurman can’t see how the aligner is fitting in the office, he often advises patients if the current aligners are tight, go back to the previous aligner. If you can remove them easily, they feel “somewhat loose” and you are in the second week of the aligner, move forward to the next set. However, if possible, let Dr. Thurman decide and call them immediately.

  • We can always order you the replacement aligners if needed and ship those to you where ever you are on your trip.  However, it is very important to continue wearing your previous set until they arrive and then start with the new replacement set.
  • Be prepared. Always carry your aligners in your purse or carry-on luggage when flying. Baggage can be delayed or lost.
  • An extra case is always a good idea. If you leave one behind in a hotel or restaurant, you have a spare.  Don’t have an extra case, ask Dr. Thurman or any of our staff members for an extra one, we’re happy to provide that to you at no charge.
  • It isn’t always convenient to brush your teeth after eating when traveling. Make sure you rinse out your mouth and aligners before reinserting into your mouth. You can brush your teeth when you get back to your room. This way is not ideal, but acceptable in a pinch on the road.

Invisalign is a great alternative to wearing braces for many teens and adults. If you have questions or problems when traveling with aligners, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here for you, and to make sure your Invisalign treatment goes as smoothly as possible!
